Replacing brake pads and rotors is one of the more approachable DIY repairs a vehicle owner can take on — but it requires the right tools, some mechanical confidence, and a clear understanding of what you're dealing with before you start. Here's how the process generally works, what variables shape the job, and why outcomes differ from one vehicle to the next.

How Disc Brakes Work

Most modern vehicles use disc brakes on at least the front axle, and many use them on all four corners. When you press the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure forces a caliper to squeeze brake pads against a spinning rotor (also called a disc). That friction slows the wheel.

Over time, brake pads wear down — they're designed to. Rotors wear too, though more slowly. When pads get thin enough, a metal wear indicator contacts the rotor and causes a squealing noise. Ignore that long enough and you'll hear grinding, which usually means metal-on-metal contact and rotor damage.

Pads and rotors are often replaced together because worn pads can score a rotor's surface. Installing new pads on a deeply grooved or warped rotor reduces braking performance and shortens the life of the new pads.

Tools and Parts You'll Need

Before starting, confirm you have:

  • Floor jack and jack stands (never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack)
  • Lug wrench or impact wrench
  • C-clamp or brake piston tool to compress the caliper piston
  • Socket set and wrench set (metric or SAE depending on your vehicle)
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Brake grease or anti-squeal compound (for the back of pads, not the friction surface)
  • Correct replacement pads and rotors for your specific year, make, model, and trim

Parts vary significantly. A compact sedan's front rotors are a different size and specification than a full-size truck's. Some performance vehicles use multi-piston calipers that require different tools to compress. Always verify fitment before purchasing parts.

The General Replacement Process 🔧

This overview applies to a typical single-piston sliding caliper setup — the most common configuration on passenger vehicles.

1. Loosen lug nuts before jacking the vehicle. Breaking them loose while the wheel is on the ground is easier and safer.

2. Raise and support the vehicle. Use proper jack points (listed in your owner's manual) and always use jack stands.

3. Remove the wheel. Set it aside.

4. Inspect the caliper and hardware. Look for brake fluid leaks or damaged boots around the caliper piston before proceeding.

5. Remove the caliper bolts (usually two slide pin bolts). Slide the caliper off. Do not let it hang by the brake line — support it with a hook or bungee cord attached to the suspension.

6. Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket. Note how they sit — you'll reinstall the new ones the same way.

7. Remove the caliper bracket (two larger bolts behind the caliper). The rotor should now slide off the hub.

8. Install the new rotor. On some vehicles, a small screw holds the rotor to the hub — remove it first.

9. Reinstall the caliper bracket and torque the bolts to spec. Torque specs matter here — undertightening is dangerous, overtightening can warp components.

10. Compress the caliper piston. New pads are thicker, so the piston must retract into the caliper body. Use a C-clamp or dedicated piston tool. Before doing this, remove some brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir — compressing the piston pushes fluid back up the line and can overflow.

11. Install new brake pads. Apply brake grease to the back of the pads and to the caliper bracket ears — not the friction surface.

12. Reinstall the caliper over the new pads and torque the slide pin bolts to spec.

13. Reinstall the wheel and torque lug nuts in a star pattern to your vehicle's specified torque.

14. Pump the brake pedal before moving the vehicle. The pedal will feel soft or go to the floor at first — that's the piston extending back out to contact the new pads. Pump until the pedal feels firm.

15. Bed the brakes. New pads and rotors need a break-in period. A common method: accelerate to 30 mph, brake moderately to about 5 mph (don't stop completely), repeat several times. Let brakes cool between cycles. This transfers an even layer of pad material onto the rotor surface.
