How Car Brakes Work

Most passenger vehicles use disc brakes on the front axle and either disc or drum brakes on the rear. Disc brakes consist of three main components: the rotor (a flat metal disc that spins with the wheel), the caliper (a hydraulic clamp that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor), and the brake pads (friction material that creates stopping force).

Drum brakes — still common on rear axles of economy vehicles — work differently. Brake shoes press outward against the inside of a spinning drum. The replacement process for drums is more involved and requires different tools.

When you press the brake pedal, hydraulic fluid transmits force from the master cylinder through brake lines to each wheel. The system is closed and pressurized, which is why air in the lines or low fluid can compromise braking performance.

What Gets Replaced — and When

Brake pads are the most frequently replaced component. They wear down with every stop and are typically measured in millimeters of friction material. Many pads include a wear indicator — a small metal tab that contacts the rotor when pads get thin, producing that familiar squealing sound.

Rotors may or may not need replacement at the same time. Rotors have a minimum thickness specification stamped on them. If they're below spec, scored deeply, or have developed heat cracks, they need to be replaced or resurfaced. Many shops recommend replacing rotors and pads together to avoid uneven wear.

Brake fluid is often overlooked. Over time it absorbs moisture, lowering its boiling point and reducing performance. Many manufacturers recommend flushing brake fluid every two years or 30,000 miles — though intervals vary by vehicle.

  3. Compress the caliper piston back into its bore to create room for new, thicker pads
  4. Remove the caliper (usually two bolts) and hang it with a wire or hook — never let it dangle by the brake hose
  5. Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket
  6. Inspect (and replace) the rotor if needed — rotors are typically held by one or two screws, or simply slide off the hub
  7. Install new pads in the caliper bracket, applying anti-squeal lubricant to the pad backing plates where specified
  8. Reinstall the caliper and torque the bolts to spec
  9. Pump the brake pedal several times before moving the vehicle to re-seat the pads against the rotor
  10. Check brake fluid level in the reservoir, as compressing the piston pushes fluid back up

⚠️ One important note: vehicles with electronic parking brakes (EPB) require a scan tool or specific reset procedure to retract the rear caliper pistons. Compressing them manually — the way you would on a traditional caliper — can damage the EPB motor. This distinction matters significantly for newer vehicles.

DIY vs. Professional Replacement

Disc brake pad replacement on a straightforward vehicle is considered one of the more accessible DIY jobs. You generally need basic hand tools, a C-clamp or piston compression tool, torque wrench, and jack equipment. Many first-time DIYers complete front brake jobs in two to three hours.

Rear drum brakes involve more components — springs, wheel cylinders, adjusters — and the reassembly requires more precision. Mistakes can affect parking brake function or cause uneven braking.

Professional brake service costs vary considerably by region, shop type (dealership vs. independent), and vehicle. Front brake pad and rotor replacement on a common sedan might run $150–$400 per axle at an independent shop; luxury or performance vehicles often cost more.
