Common reasons rotors need replacing:

  • Minimum thickness reached (stamped on every rotor from the factory)
  • Deep grooves or scoring from worn-out pads
  • Warping from heat cycles, causing a pulsing or vibrating pedal
  • Heavy surface rust that won't clear after a few stops (more common on vehicles that sit)
  • Cracking near the hub or venting — always a replacement situation, never a resurface

Some rotors can be resurfaced (turned) on a lathe rather than replaced, if enough material remains. Many shops now skip resurfacing because new rotors are often cheaper than the labor to turn them, and a fresh rotor starts at full thickness.

Tools and Parts You'll Need

Replacement pads are almost always replaced at the same time. Installing new rotors against old, grooved pads defeats the purpose and can damage the new surface quickly.
