A worn chain tensioner or timing chain guide can cause the same symptoms even when the chain itself still has some life left. These components are almost always replaced together during a cam chain change.

What the Job Actually Involves

A cam chain replacement isn't a quick job. Here's what a technician typically has to do:

  1. Drain the engine oil and often coolant
  2. Remove the valve cover, sometimes the front timing cover, and related components
  3. Release the old chain tensioner and carefully remove the chain while keeping the crank and cam positions locked

On some engines, this is relatively accessible. On others — especially transversely mounted engines in front-wheel-drive vehicles, or engines with dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) — the job can require removing the engine mount, the front of the vehicle, or even pulling the engine partially. DIY vs. Professional Repair

This is not a beginner DIY job. Even experienced home mechanics should assess their comfort level carefully. The consequences of a timing error during reassembly can destroy an engine. Specialty tools — cam locking pins, crankshaft holding tools — are typically required for the job to be done safely and correctly.
