Spark plugs are one of the most straightforward maintenance items on a gasoline engine — but "how often" is a question with a wide range of honest answers. The interval depends heavily on what type of plugs your engine uses, how the vehicle is driven, and what the manufacturer specifies for your particular engine.
What Spark Plugs Actually Do
A spark plug ignites the air-fuel mixture inside each cylinder. Every time your engine fires — thousands of times per minute — at least one spark plug is doing its job. Over time, the electrode that produces the spark wears down, and the plug's ability to ignite the mixture efficiently degrades. The result is typically harder starts, reduced fuel economy, rough idling, or a noticeable loss of power.
Worn plugs don't always announce themselves dramatically. In many cases, performance declines gradually enough that drivers don't notice until the plugs are significantly overdue.
The Two Main Categories: Standard vs. Long-Life Plugs
The most important variable in replacement intervals is plug material.

- Towing or hauling regularly — Sustained high loads put more demand on the ignition system.
- Extended idling — Prolonged idling at low combustion temperatures contributes to fouling.
- Oil or coolant burning — If your engine is consuming oil or leaking coolant into the combustion chamber, plugs can foul far sooner than the rated interval.
- Forced induction engines — Turbocharged and supercharged engines often run hotter and may require more frequent inspection even with long-life plugs.
Drivers who mostly do highway miles in moderate climates with a well-maintained engine often get the full rated life out of their plugs. City drivers or those doing a lot of stop-and-go may not.
Engine Configuration Affects Cost and Effort
On a four-cylinder engine, replacing spark plugs is typically a manageable DIY task — four plugs, usually accessible without major disassembly.
On a V6 or V8, you're dealing with six or eight plugs, and on many modern engine layouts the rear bank of cylinders sits close to the firewall. Some V6 engines require removing an intake manifold to access all plugs. What starts as a basic maintenance task can become a multi-hour job depending on the engine design.
On engines with coil-on-plug ignition systems — where an individual ignition coil sits directly on top of each spark plug — the coils need to be removed before the plugs can be accessed. That's not complicated, but it does add steps.
Labor costs for a spark plug replacement vary considerably by region, shop type, and engine complexity. Estimates noted online vary widely — from under $100 for a simple four-cylinder to several hundred dollars for an engine where access is difficult. These figures shift depending on local labor rates and what the job actually involves on your specific engine.
What the Owner's Manual Says vs. What Actually Happens
Manufacturer-specified intervals assume the original plug type is used. If someone previously installed a shorter-life plug in an engine designed for iridium, the clock resets — and that new plug may need replacing sooner.
Similarly, some drivers replace plugs on a fixed mileage schedule regardless of condition, while others pull a plug to inspect electrode wear before committing to replacement. Inspecting plugs is a useful habit: a heavily worn or fouled plug tells you something about what's happening in that cylinder.
Misfires logged as OBD-II diagnostic trouble codes — particularly cylinder-specific misfire codes — can also point to a plug that's past its useful life, though misfires have other causes too (coils, wiring, fuel injectors).
The Range Is Wide for a Reason
A vehicle from the 1990s with conventional copper plugs might need new plugs every 25,000–30,000 miles.
