What Spark Plugs Actually Do
Every gasoline engine depends on spark plugs to ignite the air-fuel mixture inside each cylinder. That spark triggers combustion, which pushes the piston down and ultimately moves the vehicle. A spark plug fires thousands of times per minute under extreme heat and pressure. Over time, the electrode wears down, the gap widens, and the plug's ability to fire cleanly degrades.
When a plug degrades far enough, combustion becomes inconsistent. You may notice rough idling, reduced fuel economy, hesitation on acceleration, or a check engine light. In some cases, a worn plug can cause misfires severe enough to damage the catalytic converter — a much more expensive repair.

Even if two drivers own the same vehicle, their spark plugs may wear at different rates. Several factors affect how long plugs actually last in practice:
Engine design. Turbocharged and high-output engines run hotter and at higher stress. Plugs in these engines may wear faster than the interval on paper suggests.
Driving patterns. Frequent short trips — especially in cold weather — don't give the engine enough time to fully warm up. Combustion isn't as clean during warmup, and carbon deposits can build up on the plugs faster. Highway driving at consistent speeds tends to be easier on plugs.
Oil consumption. If an engine is burning oil, the excess oil in the combustion chamber fouls plugs and accelerates wear. An engine that consumes oil between changes may go through plugs more quickly regardless of mileage.
Fuel quality and type. Consistent use of quality fuel and proper octane ratings supports cleaner combustion. Ethanol-blended fuels and off-spec fuel can contribute to deposit buildup over time.
Ignition system condition. Plugs don't operate in isolation. Worn ignition coils, degraded plug wires, or a failing distributor cap (on older systems) can cause uneven firing that accelerates plug wear.
Reading the Signs Before the Interval Hits

In a traditional hybrid, the gasoline engine cycles on and off rather than running continuously. This changes the wear dynamic. More frequent cold starts and stop-start operation can create conditions that foul plugs faster — even at lower overall mileage. Some hybrid owners and technicians recommend inspecting plugs on a shorter mileage schedule than a comparable non-hybrid vehicle would require, though manufacturer guidance varies.
Fully electric vehicles don't have spark plugs at all — no combustion engine means no ignition system of this type.
DIY vs. Shop Replacement
Spark plug replacement is one of the more accessible DIY maintenance jobs on many older or simpler engines. On a basic four-cylinder with an easily accessible valve cover, the job often requires just a socket set and a torque wrench.
Modern engines complicate this. Some V6 and V8 configurations bury rear-bank plugs under intake manifolds or require significant disassembly. Turbocharged engines can have plugs that are prone to seizing if not removed carefully and at the right temperature. Incorrect torque on reinstallation can damage the cylinder head threads — a much bigger repair than the plugs themselves.
Labor costs for professional spark plug replacement vary significantly by region, shop type, and how accessible the plugs are on a given engine. A straightforward four-cylinder job is quoted very differently from a transverse V6 where half the plugs require removing other components.
What's Actually Driving Your Interval
The number on the side of a plug box or in a service guide is a starting point, not a finish line. Your engine's age, condition, oil consumption history, the type of driving you do, the plug material already installed, and your manufacturer's specific requirements all shape the real-world answer.
The spec for a 2010 base-trim sedan and a 2022 turbocharged crossover may share the same nominal interval on a chart while behaving completely differently in practice. Your owner's manual and an honest look at your engine's condition are what close that gap.
