  • Dielectric grease — for the inside of the boot on COP systems

Step-by-Step: Installing Spark Plugs

1. Let the engine cool completely. Working on a hot engine risks burns and makes it easier to cross-thread plugs into an aluminum head.

2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. This prevents accidental starts and protects the ignition system while you work.

3. Locate and access each plug. Remove any engine covers, coil packs, ignition wires, or intake components blocking access. Keep track of where everything goes — label connectors if needed.

4. Blow out the plug wells. Before removing anything, use compressed air to clear dirt and debris from around the plug. Any grit that falls into the cylinder is a serious problem.

5. Remove the old plug. Use your spark plug socket and a slow, steady motion. If it feels stuck, don't force it — a broken plug in the head is a much bigger repair job. Penetrating oil and patience help.

6. Inspect the old plug. 🔍 A healthy plug has a light tan or gray deposit. Black sooty deposits suggest a rich fuel mixture or oil burning. White or blistered electrodes indicate overheating. These observations can point to larger engine issues.

7. Check and set the gap on the new plug. Use a gap tool to verify the gap matches your vehicle's specification. Adjust by carefully bending the side electrode — never touch the center electrode.

8. Thread the new plug in by hand first. This prevents cross-threading. If it doesn't turn smoothly by hand, stop and recheck alignment.

9. Torque to spec. Your vehicle's service manual lists the correct torque value. Over-tightening is one of the most common DIY mistakes — and the consequences are expensive.

10. Reinstall coil packs or wires. Apply a thin layer of dielectric grease to the inside of the boot before reconnecting. This prevents the boot from fusing to the plug over time.

11. Reconnect the battery and start the engine. Let it idle and listen for smooth, even operation. A misfire at startup usually clears within a minute as the new plugs seat.
