What a Catalytic Converter Actually Does

The catalytic converter is part of your vehicle's exhaust system. It sits between the engine and the muffler and uses a ceramic or metalite honeycomb coated with precious metals — typically platinum, palladium, and rhodium — to convert harmful combustion gases (carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides) into less harmful emissions before they exit the tailpipe.

Because it handles extreme heat and constant exhaust flow, it does wear out. Damage can also come from engine misfires, oil or coolant burning through the exhaust, road debris impact, or plain old age and mileage.
