A shoulder check is one of the most fundamental — and most skipped — habits in everyday driving. It's simple in concept but easy to shortcut, and that shortcut causes a surprising number of collisions every year.

A shoulder check is the act of briefly turning your head to look over your shoulder before changing lanes, merging, pulling away from a curb, or making any maneuver where a vehicle, cyclist, or pedestrian might be in a position your mirrors don't fully show.
