That said, the process varies more than people expect, depending on the vehicle, which corner of the car needs the bulb, and how the housing is designed.

How Turn Signal Bulbs Work

Turn signals use a simple circuit: the flasher relay sends pulses of power to the bulb, which causes it to blink. When the bulb burns out, some vehicles begin hyperflashing — the turn signal blinks noticeably faster than normal — because the circuit detects reduced resistance. Others simply stop blinking and show a dashboard indicator. Either way, a burned-out bulb is usually self-evident.

Most turn signal bulbs are traditional incandescent filament bulbs, though newer vehicles increasingly use LED assemblies that are sealed into the housing and can't be replaced as individual bulbs. That distinction matters a lot before you start.

Before You Buy a Replacement Bulb

The most important step happens before you touch the car: look up the correct bulb number for your specific year, make, and model. Auto parts stores have reference books at the counter, and most have online lookup tools. Common turn signal bulb numbers include the 1157 (dual-filament, used for combination stop/turn lights) and the 3157, 7443, and similar variants — but using the wrong bulb can cause hyperflashing, dim output, or a poor fit.

Check whether your vehicle uses:

  • Dual-filament bulbs — one bulb handles both the turn signal and brake or parking light
  • Single-filament bulbs — a dedicated bulb for the turn signal only

Front Turn Signals vs. Rear Turn Signals

Front turn signals are often accessible by opening the hood. Some vehicles have a twist-lock socket behind the headlight assembly that you can reach by hand. Others require removing a headlight housing, a wheel well liner, or front fascia clips — a much bigger job.

Rear turn signals are commonly accessed from inside the trunk. Peeling back the trunk liner reveals the back of the light assembly, where bulb sockets twist out without removing anything from the exterior. On trucks and SUVs, rear access panels or liftgate trim panels may need to come off instead.

Side marker and mirror-mounted signals vary widely — some pop out easily with a flathead, others require mirror disassembly.

Step-by-Step: Basic Bulb Replacement

This applies to vehicles with accessible, traditional bulb sockets:

  1. Turn off the vehicle and engage the parking brake.
  2. Locate the light assembly and identify whether access is from behind (interior/engine bay) or the front (exterior removal).
  3. Remove any fasteners or panels blocking access to the bulb socket.
  4. Twist the socket counterclockwise and pull it straight out of the housing.
  5. Pull the old bulb straight out or give it a slight push-and-twist depending on the bulb type.
  6. Insert the new bulb without touching the glass.
  7. Reinstall the socket, twisting it clockwise until it locks.
  8. Test the signal before reassembling any panels.

If the new bulb doesn't light up, check the socket for corrosion, test the fuse, and verify you have the right bulb number.

Labor costs at a shop for a basic bulb swap can range from under $20 to over $100 depending on how much disassembly is involved. Parts costs for individual bulbs are typically low — a few dollars for standard incandescent types — though LED replacement modules for factory LED housings can run significantly higher.
