For straightforward halogen bulbs in vehicles with good access, this is a reasonable DIY job for most owners. You'll need:

  • Possibly a screwdriver or socket wrench if covers need to be removed
  • A flashlight for working in tight spaces

Plan to replace both bulbs at the same time, even if only one has failed. Bulbs on the same vehicle age together, and the second one typically fails soon after the first.

Shop labor costs for headlight bulb replacement vary by location, vehicle complexity, and whether one or both bulbs are being replaced. Simple halogen swaps tend to be on the lower end; HID or assembly-level replacements can run significantly higher.

After Replacement: Beam Alignment

Replacing a bulb doesn't always guarantee proper aim. If the housing was removed and reinstalled, or if you're installing a new assembly, headlight aim may need adjustment. Misaimed headlights reduce your visibility and can blind other drivers — something that may also come up during a vehicle safety inspection, depending on your state.

Beam alignment can be checked against a wall using a simple measurement method described in most owner's manuals, or adjusted at a shop with alignment equipment.
