How to Replace a License Plate Bulb (And What to Know Before You Do)

A burned-out license plate light is one of the smallest, cheapest repairs on any vehicle — but it's also one of the most commonly ignored. In most states, a non-functioning license plate light is a citable traffic violation. It can also flag your vehicle during an inspection. The good news: this is one of the few repairs almost any driver can handle in a parking lot with basic tools.

Why the License Plate Bulb Matters

Every vehicle registered for road use is required to have an illuminated rear license plate at night. The bulb sits in a small housing mounted above or around the plate, and its job is simple: make the plate readable in the dark. Most license plate bulbs are small, low-wattage incandescent or LED units. They don't burn bright enough to be obvious from inside the car, which is why drivers often don't notice when one fails.

A dead plate light won't trigger a dashboard warning in most vehicles. You usually find out when a police officer pulls you over or an inspection tech flags it.

What Type of Bulb Do You Need?

This is where things vary more than people expect. License plate bulbs are not universal.

Common bulb types used in license plate lights include:

  • 194 / T10 (wedge base) — the most common type across many domestic and import vehicles
  • 168 — similar to the 194 but slightly higher wattage
  • 2825 — used in European-spec and some luxury models
  • Festoon / dome-style bulbs — used in some housings where the bulb sits between two spring clips rather than a socket

The exact bulb depends on your vehicle's make, model, model year, and sometimes trim level. A bulb lookup tool at any auto parts store — or your owner's manual — will point you to the right fitment. Don't assume your neighbor's truck takes the same bulb yours does.

LED vs. incandescent: Many drivers upgrade to LED replacements, which last significantly longer and draw less power. Most LED T10 and festoon replacements are direct plug-in fits. One thing to know: some vehicles with newer electronics will display a "bulb out" warning even after an LED install, because the circuit expects a certain resistance load from an incandescent. Load resistors or CANBUS-compatible LEDs solve this on sensitive systems, though not every car needs them.

Tools and Materials

For most vehicles, you need:

  • Replacement bulb (correct fitment)
  • Small flathead screwdriver or trim tool
  • Phillips screwdriver (on some housings)
  • Work gloves or a clean cloth (for handling bulbs)

That's typically it. The job rarely requires lifting the vehicle or special equipment.

How the Replacement Generally Works 🔧

The process varies by vehicle, but here's how it goes on most:

  1. Locate the housing. On most vehicles, the license plate light sits in a small housing mounted to the bumper, trunk lid, or liftgate — directly above or beside the plate.

  2. Access the bulb. Some housings pop out from the outside with a pry tool. Others have a small screw. A few require removing the lens from inside the trunk. Check your owner's manual if it's not obvious — forcing the wrong part can crack a brittle plastic lens.

  3. Remove the bulb. Wedge-base bulbs pull straight out or twist slightly before pulling. Festoon bulbs compress between spring clips. Note the orientation before you remove the old one.

  4. Install the new bulb. Avoid touching the glass of halogen bulbs with bare fingers — skin oils can cause hot spots and early failure. LEDs don't have this issue, but it's still a clean habit.

  5. Test before reassembling. Turn on the vehicle's lights and confirm the new bulb works before snapping the housing back in.

  6. Reseat the housing. Press or screw it back until it's secure. A loose housing can let moisture in and corrode the socket.

The whole job typically takes under 15 minutes on vehicles with straightforward access.

When It's Not That Simple

A few scenarios make this job more involved:

  • Integrated LED assemblies on newer vehicles sometimes don't use replaceable bulbs at all. The entire housing unit must be replaced, which can cost significantly more and may require a dealer or shop.
  • Corroded sockets are common on older vehicles, especially in regions with road salt. If the socket itself is damaged, bulb replacement alone won't fix the problem.
  • Tight access on certain body styles — some trucks and SUVs with rear-mounted spare tires or unusual tail configurations require panel removal to reach the housing.
  • Dual bulb setups — some vehicles use two bulbs per plate light. Both may need replacement at the same time for even lighting.

What It Typically Costs

A replacement incandescent bulb generally costs $2–$8. LED replacements run $8–$20 for a pair. If a shop does the work, labor adds to that — though many shops charge minimally for a bulb swap. Costs vary by region, vehicle, and whether the socket or housing also needs attention.

The Part You Have to Figure Out for Your Vehicle

The bulb type, housing design, and access method are specific to your year, make, and model. What takes five minutes on one car can take thirty on another.
