How to Do a DIY Oil Change: What You Need to Know Before You Start

Changing your own oil is one of the most accessible maintenance tasks a vehicle owner can take on. It requires basic tools, a modest investment in supplies, and a couple of hours — especially the first time. Understanding what's actually involved helps you decide whether it fits your situation, and do it right if it does.

What an Oil Change Actually Does

Engine oil lubricates moving metal parts, reduces friction, carries heat away from the engine, and suspends contaminants until they reach the oil filter. Over time, oil breaks down and becomes saturated with combustion byproducts, metal particles, and moisture. Fresh oil does its job. Degraded oil doesn't.

A standard oil change involves draining the old oil from the engine's oil pan, replacing the oil filter, and refilling with fresh oil of the correct type and quantity.

What You'll Need

Tools:

  • Oil drain pan
  • Socket wrench and the correct socket size for your drain plug
  • Oil filter wrench (may or may not be necessary depending on filter placement and how tight it is)
  • Jack stands or ramps if your vehicle doesn't have enough clearance to work underneath safely — never rely on a floor jack alone
  • Funnel
  • Rags or shop towels
  • Gloves

Supplies:

  • The correct oil type and quantity for your engine (check your owner's manual — not the sticker at a quick lube shop)
  • A new oil filter compatible with your specific engine
  • A new drain plug washer if your vehicle requires one (many do)

Getting the oil specification wrong matters. Using the wrong viscosity — say, 5W-30 when your engine calls for 0W-20 — can affect fuel economy, engine protection, and in some cases warranty coverage. Your owner's manual is the authoritative source.

The Basic Process

  1. Warm the engine slightly — two to three minutes of running makes oil drain more completely, but a fully hot engine makes scalding oil a burn hazard. Warm, not hot.
  2. Safely raise and support the vehicle if needed for clearance.
  3. Locate the drain plug on the underside of the oil pan and position your drain pan beneath it.
  4. Remove the drain plug and let the oil drain fully — this takes several minutes.
  5. Remove and replace the oil filter. Most filters are spin-on canisters. Some newer vehicles use a cartridge-style filter accessed from above, which changes the process slightly. Lightly lubricate the new filter's gasket with fresh oil before installing.
  6. Reinstall the drain plug with a new washer if required. Don't overtighten — stripped drain plug threads are an expensive mistake.
  7. Refill with fresh oil through the fill cap on top of the engine. Check your manual for the correct capacity.
  8. Run the engine briefly, check for leaks around the drain plug and filter, then shut off and recheck the dipstick level.

Doing it yourself typically costs less in labor but requires your time, physical access under the vehicle, and somewhere to properly dispose of used oil. Most auto parts retailers accept used motor oil for recycling at no charge — pouring it down a drain or into trash is illegal in virtually every state and environmentally harmful.

A shop oil change bundles convenience, disposal, and a visual inspection of the undercarriage — which has real value. The cost difference between DIY and a shop varies significantly by region, shop type, and oil specification. Full synthetic changes at independent shops often run less than many people expect.

Where Things Go Wrong

The most common DIY mistakes are avoidable:

  • Overtightening the drain plug or filter — hand-tight plus a partial turn is usually sufficient; check your service manual
  • Using the wrong oil spec or quantity
  • Forgetting to remove the old filter gasket — if it sticks to the engine when you remove the filter, installing a new filter creates a double-gasket leak
  • Not checking for leaks before driving
  • Resetting the oil life monitor — many modern vehicles have one; it won't reset itself

Your Vehicle Is the Variable

Oil change procedures that are straightforward on one engine can be genuinely awkward on another — due to filter placement, underbody design, or access constraints. The interval that's appropriate for a high-mileage vehicle running conventional oil differs from one running a fresh synthetic in a newer engine under normal driving conditions.
