Tires are the only part of your vehicle that actually touches the road. Changing them — whether you're rotating, replacing, or swapping between seasonal sets — is one of the most routine maintenance tasks in vehicle ownership. But "changing tires" covers several different situations, and the details matter.
What "Changing Tires" Actually Means
The phrase gets used in a few different ways:
- Flat tire change — swapping a flat or damaged tire for a spare, temporarily or permanently
- Full tire replacement — installing new tires because the current ones are worn, damaged, or no longer safe
- Seasonal tire swap — switching between summer/all-season tires and winter tires as weather changes
- Tire rotation — moving tires to different wheel positions to even out wear

How Tire Wear Works — and Why It Matters
Tires don't wear evenly on their own. Front tires typically wear faster than rear tires on front-wheel-drive vehicles because they handle both steering and power delivery. On rear-wheel-drive vehicles, the back tires bear more load. All-wheel-drive vehicles spread the work more evenly but still develop uneven wear over time.
Tread depth is the standard measurement of remaining tire life. New tires typically start around 10/32 to 11/32 of an inch of tread depth. The legal minimum in most U.S. states is 2/32 of an inch — but many safety organizations recommend replacing tires at 4/32 because wet braking distance increases significantly as tread wears down.
The penny test is a rough check: insert a penny into the tread groove with Lincoln's head pointing down. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, you're at or below 2/32 — the tire is legally worn out in most states. The quarter test (using Washington's head) gives you the 4/32 warning threshold.
Replacing Tires: The Key Variables 🔧
When buying new tires, several factors shape your options and costs:
Tire size is stamped on the sidewall of your current tire — something like 225/65R17. That number tells you the width, aspect ratio, and rim diameter. You generally need to match this exactly, or consult a fitment guide if you're changing sizes intentionally.

On all-wheel-drive vehicles in particular, mismatched tread depths across all four tires can stress the drivetrain — some manufacturers require all four tires to be replaced at the same time. Changing a Flat: The Short Version
A flat tire change — whether roadside or in a parking lot — follows the same basic sequence: loosen the lug nuts before jacking, raise the vehicle on a solid jack point, swap the flat for the spare, hand-tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern, lower the vehicle, then torque the lug nuts fully. A torque wrench and the correct torque spec (found in your owner's manual) matter here — overtightening or undertightening lug nuts causes problems.
Spare tires are not all the same. A full-size spare can typically be driven like a regular tire. A compact "donut" spare is rated for limited speed (usually 50 mph) and distance (often 50–70 miles). Run-flat tires allow limited driving on a flat — but only up to the speed and distance the manufacturer specifies. Many newer vehicles have no spare at all and include only a sealant kit, which doesn't work on every type of damage.
Seasonal Tire Swapping 🌨️
In regions with serious winters, many drivers keep two sets of tires — winter tires mounted on their own wheels, swapped twice a year. Running dedicated winter tires on a separate wheel set avoids repeated mounting and dismounting fees and extends the life of both sets.
The cost of a seasonal swap varies by shop, region, and whether the tires are already mounted on their own rims. Mounted-on-rim swaps are faster (and typically cheaper) than unmounted swaps that require breaking the bead and remounting.
After any tire change involving removal from the rim — or after a rotation — TPMS sensors (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) may need to be reset or re-synced. Many shops do this as part of the service, but it's worth confirming.
