How to Check Tire Tread Depth (And What the Numbers Mean)
Tire tread depth is one of the most practical safety checks you can do on any vehicle — no appointment, no special tools, and no mechanical expertise required. But knowing how to check it is only part of the picture. Knowing what you're looking at, what the measurements mean, and what varies by vehicle and location is what turns a quick check into a useful one.
Why Tread Depth Matters
Tread is the grooved rubber surface that contacts the road. Those grooves channel water away from the contact patch, helping tires grip wet pavement. As tread wears down, that water-clearing ability diminishes — and stopping distances increase, sometimes dramatically.
A tire with worn tread doesn't just struggle in rain. It also has less grip on loose surfaces, is more vulnerable to punctures, and is more likely to hydroplane at highway speeds. Tread depth isn't just a regulatory checkbox — it's a direct indicator of how much safety margin your tires are providing.
How Tread Depth Is Measured
Tread depth is measured in 32nds of an inch in the United States. A brand-new passenger tire typically starts at 10/32" to 11/32" of tread depth, though performance, truck, and all-season tires can start deeper — sometimes 12/32" or more.

Insert a penny into a tread groove with Lincoln's head pointing down into the tire. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, the tread is at or below 2/32" — the tire is legally worn out in most jurisdictions. If Lincoln's head is partially covered, you have more than 2/32" remaining.
This test is quick and free, but it only tells you whether you've crossed the minimum threshold. It doesn't tell you where you are in the range.
2. The Quarter Test
The same method, using a quarter instead of a penny. Washington's head gives you a rough 4/32" marker. If the top of Washington's head disappears into the groove, you have at least 4/32" of tread remaining. If you can see his full head, you're below 4/32" — still legal in most places, but worth watching.
3. A Tread Depth Gauge
A tread depth gauge is an inexpensive tool (typically a few dollars at an auto parts store) that gives you an exact reading in 32nds of an inch. You press the probe into the tread groove and read the measurement directly. This is the most accurate method and takes about the same amount of time as the coin tests.
For a thorough check, measure at three points across the width of each tire — the inner edge, center, and outer edge. Uneven readings can indicate alignment issues, improper inflation, or suspension wear — problems worth investigating separately.
Where to Measure and What to Look For
Always check tread in the main grooves, not the shallow sipes (the thin slits cut into tread blocks). Most modern tires also have wear indicator bars — small raised rubber ridges built into the grooves at the 2/32" level. When the tread surface is flush with those bars, the tire has reached its legal wear limit.
Check all four tires individually. Tread wear is often uneven across an axle or between front and rear, especially on vehicles that haven't had regular rotations.

Tire type. Winter and snow tires often have deeper starting tread depths and their own wear indicators. Running a winter tire past its effective range defeats the purpose of having it.
Age and condition. A tire can have legal tread depth but still be unsafe due to cracking, dry rot, or age. Most manufacturers recommend replacing tires older than six years regardless of tread, though this varies by brand and usage.
What Uneven Wear Tells You
If tread is worn more on the edges than the center, the tire has likely been underinflated. Center wear points to overinflation. Wear on one edge only often signals an alignment problem. Cupping or scalloping — an irregular, wavy wear pattern — can indicate suspension issues.
