How to Check Tire Wear: What the Tread Tells You

Tires wear down gradually, which makes it easy to miss the moment they stop being safe. Knowing how to read tire wear — and what different patterns mean — is one of the most practical maintenance skills a driver can have. It requires no tools, takes about five minutes, and tells you a lot about both tire condition and the health of your suspension and alignment.

Why Tire Wear Matters

Tread depth is what keeps a tire gripping the road, especially in rain and snow. As rubber wears away, stopping distances increase and the risk of hydroplaning goes up. Most new tires start with 10/32 to 11/32 inches of tread depth. The widely accepted minimum safe depth is 2/32 of an inch — and many safety experts recommend replacing tires before you reach that point, particularly in wet climates.

Beyond depth, the pattern of wear reveals how well your vehicle is aligned, how your tires are inflated, and whether your suspension components are doing their job.

The Penny Test (and the Quarter Test)

The simplest way to check tread depth is the coin method.

Penny test: Insert a penny into a tread groove with Lincoln's head pointing down. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, you're at or below 2/32 — replacement is overdue.

Quarter test: Do the same with a quarter and Washington's head down. If you can see the top of Washington's head, you're at or below 4/32 — you're getting close and should start planning for replacement.

Check multiple grooves across the tire width and around the circumference. Uneven readings are themselves a warning sign.

Built-In Wear Indicators

Most tires have tread wear indicators — small raised bars molded into the grooves at 2/32 of an inch. When the tread surface is flush with those bars, the tire has reached its legal minimum in most states. These indicators are typically located at several points around the tire, marked by a small triangle or "TWI" symbol on the sidewall.

Center and edge wear are often straightforward inflation issues. One-sided or feathered wear almost always means alignment needs attention. Cupping or scalloping suggests suspension components may need inspection — it won't improve just by replacing the tires.

How to Do a Visual Inspection

You don't need a gauge for a basic check, though a tread depth gauge (available for a few dollars at any auto parts store) gives you a precise reading.

Step 1: Park on a flat surface and turn the steering wheel to give yourself a better view of the front tires.

Step 2: Look across the full width of each tire. Notice whether the center is worn differently than the edges.

Step 3: Crouch down and look at the tread from the side. Scalloping or cupping is easier to spot this way.

Step 4: Run your hand across the tread. Feathering — where one edge of each tread block feels sharp and the other feels rounded — is something you often feel before you see it.

Step 5: Check the sidewalls for cracking, bulges, or bubbles. A bulge in the sidewall indicates internal damage and means the tire should be replaced regardless of tread depth.

Step 6: Repeat on all four tires. Don't forget the spare if your vehicle carries a full-size one.

Variables That Affect How Quickly Tires Wear

No two drivers or vehicles wear tires at the same rate. Several factors shape how fast tread disappears:

  • Driving style — Frequent hard braking and fast cornering accelerate wear significantly
  • Vehicle weight — Heavier vehicles (trucks, SUVs, loaded vans) wear tires faster than lighter cars
  • Drive configuration — On FWD vehicles, front tires handle both steering and power delivery, so they typically wear faster than rear tires; on RWD, the reverse is often true; AWD systems distribute wear more evenly but add complexity
  • Climate and road surfaces — Hot pavement, rough roads, and frequent stop-and-go driving all increase wear rate
  • Rotation habits — Regular rotation (typically every 5,000–7,500 miles, though intervals vary by vehicle and tire type) extends tread life by evening out wear across all four tires
  • Tire type — Performance tires with softer compounds grip better but wear faster than touring or all-season tires

What Uneven Wear Actually Costs You

Beyond safety, worn or unevenly wearing tires affect fuel economy, ride comfort, and noise. A tire wearing unevenly due to an alignment problem won't be fixed by replacement alone — the underlying issue will chew through new tires at the same rate. Identifying the cause of the wear pattern matters as much as knowing the tread is low.
