Direct TPMS uses physical sensors mounted inside each wheel — typically attached to the valve stem. Each sensor measures actual air pressure and transmits that data wirelessly to your vehicle's computer. When pressure drops, the sensor reports it directly.

Indirect TPMS doesn't use pressure sensors at all. Instead, it piggybacks on your vehicle's ABS wheel-speed sensors and detects pressure loss by comparing how fast each wheel rotates. An underinflated tire has a slightly smaller diameter and spins faster — the system interprets that discrepancy as low pressure.

Why the TPMS Light Comes On

The warning light doesn't always mean your tires are low. Common triggers include:

  • Genuinely low tire pressure — the most common cause, especially in cold weather (tire pressure drops roughly 1 PSI for every 10°F decrease in temperature)
  • A sensor that wasn't reset after you filled the tires back up
  • A faulty or dead sensor — direct TPMS sensors run on batteries that last roughly 5–10 years and aren't replaceable separately on most designs
  • A sensor that lost its pairing with the vehicle's receiver after a tire rotation, wheel swap, or sensor replacement
  • A new set of tires or wheels installed without relearning the sensors

A solid light typically means current low pressure or a fault. A flashing TPMS light — usually blinking for 60–90 seconds before staying solid — indicates a system malfunction rather than just low pressure.

How a TPMS Reset Actually Works

These systems recalibrate after you've inflated all four tires to the correct pressure. The reset is usually done through a button (often labeled TPMS or SET), a steering wheel menu, or the infotainment system. After you reset it, the system drives a baseline and monitors for deviations. The light should go off after you've driven a short distance — typically 15–30 minutes at varying speeds.

Direct TPMS Relearn Procedure 🔧

This is more involved. After inflating tires to spec, the vehicle needs to recognize which sensor is in which wheel position. There are three common relearn methods:

  • Stationary relearn — uses a TPMS scan tool or a magnet/activation tool placed at each valve stem in a specific sequence to trigger each sensor to broadcast its ID to the vehicle's receiver
  • Drive relearn — requires driving at a sustained speed (often 15–25 mph or higher) for several minutes until the system auto-detects all sensors
  • OBD-II relearn — a scan tool connects to the vehicle's diagnostic port and programs sensor IDs directly into the ECU

Which method your vehicle supports depends on the make, model, and year. Some vehicles support all three; others require a specific sequence.

Variables That Shape Your Situation

Several factors determine how straightforward — or complicated — your reset will be:

  • Vehicle type and age: Older vehicles with simpler systems often have easier relearn processes. Newer vehicles, particularly luxury brands and some domestic trucks, may require dealer-level scan tools.
  • Whether sensors were replaced: Aftermarket sensors sometimes require additional programming steps to match the vehicle's receiver frequency and protocol.
