What Does AAA Classic Membership Cover?

AAA Classic membership is the entry-level tier of the American Automobile Association's roadside assistance program. It's the most widely held membership level and covers the basics that most drivers call on in a typical breakdown situation — but it has real limits that matter depending on how far from home you drive, how old your vehicle is, and what kind of trouble you run into.

What's Included in AAA Classic Coverage

Classic membership generally includes four core services:

1. Towing AAA Classic covers towing up to a set distance — commonly around 5 miles per service call, though this varies by region and local club. If your vehicle needs to be towed farther than the covered distance, you pay out of pocket for the extra mileage. For drivers in rural areas or places where the nearest qualified shop might be 20 or 30 miles away, this limit can matter.

2. Battery Service If your battery dies, a AAA service technician will come out, test the battery, and attempt a jump-start. In many cases they can also sell and install a replacement battery on the spot, though pricing for that battery is separate from the membership fee.

3. Flat Tire Service A technician will change your flat to your spare — assuming you have a usable spare in the vehicle. AAA doesn't provide a spare if you don't have one. If your spare is also flat or missing, towing kicks in.

4. Fuel Delivery If you run out of gas, Classic membership covers delivery of a small amount of fuel to get you to the nearest station. The fuel itself typically costs extra; the delivery service is what the membership covers.

Your vehicle's age and reliability. A late-model vehicle under manufacturer warranty may rarely need roadside assistance. An older vehicle with higher mileage might push Classic's annual service call limits faster than expected.
