A CV axle is one of those parts most drivers never think about — until it starts clicking on turns or shuddering under acceleration. When that happens, replacement becomes unavoidable. What you'll pay depends on several factors that vary considerably from one vehicle and situation to the next.
What a CV Axle Does
CV stands for constant velocity. The axle shaft transfers power from the transmission or differential to the wheels, and the CV joints at each end allow that shaft to flex as the suspension moves and the wheels turn. Most front-wheel-drive vehicles have two CV axles — one on each side. All-wheel-drive and some rear-wheel-drive vehicles have them at all four corners. Signs the CV Axle Is Failing
The most recognizable symptom is a clicking or popping noise during turns, especially at low speeds in tight turns. This usually points to a worn outer CV joint. A shuddering vibration during acceleration, particularly when pulling away from a stop, can indicate a failing inner joint. A grease splatter on the inside of your wheel or on suspension components often means a torn boot has been leaking.

DIY vs. Shop Repair
CV axle replacement is a feasible DIY job for someone with intermediate mechanical skills, a floor jack and jack stands, basic hand tools, and a few specialty tools for pressing or popping the axle free. The part itself is usually straightforward to source.
That said, torque specifications for the axle nut are critical — undertightening or overtightening that nut can cause safety issues.
