Your vehicle's differential is one of those components most drivers never think about — until something goes wrong. Changing the fluid inside it is one of the less glamorous maintenance tasks, but skipping it can lead to expensive gear damage. What a Differential Does — and Why the Fluid Matters
The differential transfers power from the drivetrain to the wheels while allowing each wheel to rotate at a different speed — essential when turning a corner. Inside that housing, gears and bearings are constantly meshing under load and heat.
Differential fluid (also called gear oil) lubricates those moving parts, dissipates heat, and prevents metal-on-metal wear. Over time, the fluid breaks down from heat cycles, picks up metal particles from normal gear wear, and loses its protective properties. When it degrades far enough, it stops doing its job — and the gears pay the price.
Unlike engine oil, differential fluid doesn't get changed nearly as often, but it does need to be changed.

"Lifetime" fluid claims deserve healthy skepticism. Some manufacturers designate differential fluid as a sealed, never-change item. Independent mechanics and many vehicle owners find that "lifetime" often means "the lifetime of the warranty," not the lifetime of the vehicle — especially under real-world driving conditions.
Signs the Fluid May Already Be Overdue
You don't always get a warning light. Watch for:
- Whining or howling from the rear or front axle, especially under load

- Chatter or shudder in corners (more common with limited-slip differentials)
- Burning smell from under the vehicle after driving
These symptoms don't automatically mean fluid is the issue — they can also point to worn bearings or damaged gears — but degraded fluid accelerates all of that damage.

Differential fluid changes are straightforward mechanically: drain the old fluid, inspect the drain plug for excessive metal debris, and refill with the correct fluid to spec. The main variables are:
- Access — some vehicles make the fill and drain plugs easy to reach; others don't
- Fluid type — gear oil weight and spec varies by vehicle and differential type; using the wrong fluid causes problems
