  5. Inspect the flywheel — check for heat cracks, scoring, or glazing; resurface or replace as needed
  6. Remove the pressure plate and clutch disc
  7. Replace the throwout bearing and pilot bearing
  8. Install the new clutch disc using an alignment tool to center it precisely
  9. Bolt up the new pressure plate to spec
  10. Reinstall the transmission, driveshaft, and all associated hardware
  11. Bleed the hydraulic clutch system if applicable
  12. Adjust the clutch pedal if the vehicle uses a cable linkage

The flywheel is a variable that significantly affects total cost. A flywheel that can be resurfaced adds modest cost. One that needs full replacement — especially a dual-mass flywheel (DMF), found on many European and diesel vehicles — can be expensive on its own.

How Long a Clutch Lasts

Clutch life varies enormously. A commuter who rarely tows might get 100,000 miles or more out of a clutch. Driving style is the single biggest factor — how smoothly someone releases the pedal, whether they ride the clutch in traffic, and how they handle hill starts all affect lifespan.
