A small chip in your windshield can turn into a large crack faster than most drivers expect. The plastic interlayer holds everything together, which is why laminated glass is used for windshields specifically.

The chip itself is a void in the outer glass layer. When left untreated, air and moisture enter that void. The moisture weakens the bond at the edges, stress propagates through the glass, and what started as a quarter-sized chip becomes a two-foot crack.

How Windshield Chip Repair Actually Works
