What Triggers the Camera to Turn On

Wired vs. Wireless: The Core Tradeoff 📡

Wired systems run a video cable from the camera at the rear of the vehicle through the interior to the monitor near the dashboard. This requires routing wire through door seals, interior panels, or under carpet. The result is a stable, interference-free signal with no battery dependency.

Wireless systems transmit the video signal via radio frequency or WiFi. Installation is easier — no long cable run — but wireless systems can experience signal lag, interference, or dropped video, especially on vehicles with a lot of metal or near other wireless devices. The camera still needs to be wired for power, so wireless doesn't mean no wiring at all.

Since May 2018, federal regulations in the United States have required all new passenger vehicles under 10,000 lbs. to include a rear visibility system meeting specific performance standards. That requirement covers new vehicles — it does not require owners of older vehicles to retrofit one.

That said, adding a backup camera to a vehicle that didn't come with one is legal in all states, and widely encouraged for safety. Some commercial fleet operators may face separate requirements depending on their state and vehicle classification.
