A backup camera (sometimes spelled "backup camra" in search — same thing) is a rear-facing video camera that activates when you shift into reverse, sending a live feed to a screen on your dashboard or rearview mirror. It shows you what's directly behind your vehicle in real time, making it easier to park, back out of driveways, and avoid obstacles — especially low ones that mirrors simply can't show.

Display Options: What You Connect It To
This is often where things get more complicated than expected. Your display options depend heavily on what your vehicle already has:
- Factory infotainment screen — Some vehicles can be integrated, but many require additional modules, adapters, or dealer-level programming
- Aftermarket head unit — If you've already replaced your factory radio with an aftermarket unit, most modern aftermarket head units have a dedicated camera input
- Rearview mirror monitor — A replacement mirror with a built-in LCD screen. Discreet and relatively easy to install
