Suspension lifts typically range from 2 to 6 inches, with some extreme setups going higher. The goals are different from leveling:

  • Significantly more ground clearance
  • Room for much larger tires (often 35 inches and up)
  • Improved approach, departure, and breakover angles for off-road use
  • A fundamentally altered suspension geometry

Quality suspension lift kits are considerably more expensive than leveling kits. Vehicle platform matters enormously. A leveling kit on a truck with a factory coil-over front suspension works differently than one on a torsion bar truck. Intended tire size is often the deciding factor. If you want to run 35-inch tires, a leveling kit won't give you the clearance you need. If you just want to clear a 33-inch tire and clean up the stance, a leveling kit may be sufficient.

How you drive changes the calculus too. Daily highway driving, towing, and hauling put different stresses on a lifted truck than weekend trail use does.
