Variables that affect the right interval for any given vehicle include:

  • Engine design — turbocharged engines run hotter and often require more frequent changes
  • Oil type — full synthetic generally lasts longer than conventional

DIY vs. Shop Oil Changes

Changing oil and the filter is one of the most accessible DIY maintenance tasks. The basic requirements: the correct oil type and quantity, the correct filter (which varies by engine), a drain pan, a wrench, and access to the drain plug and filter housing.

That said, a few things make this more complex on some vehicles:

  • Cartridge filters (common on European and newer Asian vehicles) require different tools than spin-on filters
  • Some vehicles have skid plates or undertray panels that must be removed first
  • Drain plug torque specs matter — overtightening strips threads, undertightening causes leaks
