AAA International Driver's License: What It Is and How It Works

If you're planning to drive abroad, you may have heard that AAA offers something called an "international driver's license." That term gets used loosely, and it's worth understanding exactly what you're getting — and what you're not — before you travel.

It's Actually Called an International Driving Permit

The document AAA issues is technically an International Driving Permit (IDP), not a license. This distinction matters. An IDP is not a standalone license that replaces your U.S. driver's license. It's a translation document — a standardized booklet, printed in multiple languages, that presents your license information in a format recognized by foreign authorities.

You must carry your valid U.S. driver's license alongside it at all times. The IDP alone means nothing without it.

The IDP is based on the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, which established international standards for cross-border driving recognition. Most countries that accept IDPs do so under this framework.

Why AAA Issues IDPs — and Who Else Can

In the United States, only two organizations are authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue IDPs:

  • AAA (American Automobile Association)
  • AATA (American Automobile Touring Alliance)

No other organization, website, or service can legally issue a valid U.S. IDP. If you've seen online services charging fees to issue an "international driver's license," those documents are not legitimate and will not be recognized by foreign law enforcement or rental car companies.

What the AAA IDP Includes

The AAA IDP is a small booklet that contains:

  • Your name, photo, and license information translated into multiple languages (including French, Spanish, German, Russian, Chinese, Arabic, and others)
  • A standard format recognized by traffic authorities in over 150 countries
  • An expiration date — AAA IDPs are valid for one year from the date of issue

You apply in person at a AAA branch or by mail. As of recent years, the fee has been approximately $20, though fees can vary slightly by location and membership status. You'll need to bring your valid U.S. driver's license, two passport-style photos, and a completed application.

Which Countries Require or Recommend an IDP 🌍

This is where individual circumstances vary significantly. Not every country requires an IDP, but many strongly recommend one, and some rental car companies abroad will refuse to rent to you without one, even if the country doesn't legally require it.

Country TypeIDP Situation
Most of EuropeRecommended; required in some countries (e.g., Italy, Austria, Greece)
Japan, South KoreaRequired
Australia, New ZealandRecommended for rental cars
Mexico, CanadaU.S. license generally sufficient, but IDP can help
Many countries in Africa, Asia, South AmericaRequired or strongly recommended

Requirements change. Some countries have updated their rules in recent years. The U.S. State Department and your destination country's embassy are the authoritative sources for current requirements — not travel blogs or tourism websites.

What an IDP Does Not Do

An IDP has real limits that travelers sometimes misunderstand:

  • It does not allow you to drive in countries that do not recognize U.S. licenses regardless of translation
  • It does not extend the period you're legally permitted to drive as a visitor — most countries limit tourists to driving on a foreign license for a set number of days or months
  • It does not substitute for a local license if you become a resident of another country
  • It does not make you automatically insured — you'll still need to verify coverage through your U.S. auto insurance policy or purchase coverage abroad

How Long Residency and Trip Length Affect IDP Usefulness

Short-term visitors driving abroad with an IDP are in a different situation than someone relocating internationally. If you move to another country and establish residency, most nations require you to obtain a local driver's license within a specified period — often 30 to 90 days. An IDP does not exempt you from that requirement.

For extended trips — sabbaticals, multi-month travel — some countries treat you as a resident after a certain number of days, which changes what documents are valid. The rules depend entirely on the destination country's laws and any bilateral agreements with the United States.

AAA Membership and the IDP Application

You do not need to be a AAA member to obtain an IDP through AAA, though membership may affect pricing at some locations. Non-members can still apply. The process is straightforward:

  1. Visit a participating AAA branch in person, or apply by mail
  2. Bring your valid, unexpired U.S. driver's license
  3. Provide two passport-style photos (2"x2", taken within the last six months)
  4. Complete the application form and pay the fee
  5. Receive the IDP immediately if applying in person

Processing times for mail applications vary, so applying well ahead of your travel date is sensible.

The Gap Between General Rules and Your Situation

Whether an IDP is required, recommended, or unnecessary depends on where you're going, how long you'll be there, what you plan to drive, and whether you're renting or driving your own vehicle. Rental car companies sometimes have requirements that go beyond local law. Some U.S. auto insurance policies extend coverage internationally; others don't. 🚗

The document itself is simple and inexpensive to obtain. The variables that determine how — and whether — it applies to your specific trip are the pieces only you and your destination's official sources can sort out.
