How to Decipher a Toyota VIN: What Every Character Means

Every Toyota — whether it's a Corolla, Tacoma, Camry, or Land Cruiser — carries a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) that functions like a fingerprint. No two vehicles share the same VIN, and once you know how to read it, that 17-character string tells you quite a bit about where the vehicle was built, what it is, and when it came off the line.

What a VIN Is and Where to Find It

A VIN is a standardized 17-character code assigned to every vehicle manufactured after 1981. On most Toyotas, you'll find it in several places:

  • On the dashboard, visible through the lower-left corner of the windshield
  • On the driver's side door jamb (on a sticker)
  • On your title, registration, and insurance documents
  • On the engine block itself (location varies by model)

Toyota VINs are divided into three logical sections:

This is why two Toyotas can have VINs that start differently. A Camry built in Georgetown, Kentucky begins with 4T, while the same model assembled in Japan starts with JT. Neither is more or less "authentic" — Toyota operates assembly plants in multiple countries.

Positions 4–8: Vehicle Descriptor Section

These five characters describe the vehicle itself:

  • Position 4 typically indicates the vehicle line or restraint systems (airbag type, belt configuration)
  • Position 5 identifies the vehicle series or body type
  • Position 6 identifies the body style (2-door, 4-door, wagon, etc.)
  • Position 7 indicates the engine type or displacement
  • Position 8 further specifies the engine (some manufacturers use this for trim or series)

Toyota uses these positions slightly differently across model lines and model years, so the same position doesn't always mean the same thing across a Tundra and a Prius.

Position 9: Check Digit

This character is calculated mathematically from the other 16 characters. It exists to detect fraudulent or incorrectly transcribed VINs. You can verify it using a standard check digit formula, though most people rely on VIN decoder tools to do this automatically.

Position 10: Model Year

This single character indicates the model year using a standardized alphanumeric system that cycles through letters and numbers (skipping I, O, Q, U, and Z to avoid confusion):
